Kindle Unlimited — Amazon's all-you-can-read subscription service — is one of the most debated decisions in nonfiction self-publishing. Some authors swear by it. Others say it's a trap. Here's the clear-eyed breakdown to help you decide.
What Is Kindle Unlimited?
Kindle Unlimited (KU) is Amazon's subscription service that gives readers unlimited access to enrolled books for $9.99/month. As an author, when your book is enrolled in KU (through the KDP Select program), you earn a royalty based on the number of pages read — not per copy sold.
The per-page rate fluctuates monthly based on how Amazon distributes the KU fund across all enrolled books. In recent years it's averaged around $0.004–$0.005 per page read. For a 250-page book, that's roughly $1.00–$1.25 per fully-read copy.
The Major Catch: Exclusivity
Enrolling in KDP Select (required for KU) means your eBook must be exclusively available through Amazon. You cannot sell or distribute the Kindle version on Apple Books, Google Play, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, or your own website during the enrollment period (90 days, renewable).
For most nonfiction authors targeting professionals — who are not primarily reading on non-Amazon platforms — this exclusivity is a manageable trade-off. For authors with established audiences on other platforms, it's a significant cost.
When KU Makes Sense for Nonfiction
- Your target audience is primarily US-based (KU has its largest subscriber base in the US)
- You're using the book as a lead magnet rather than a primary revenue source
- You want maximum discoverability in your launch phase
- You don't yet have distribution on other platforms
When to Skip KU
- You want to sell directly through your own website and capture customer data
- Your audience is international (especially UK/AU where Kobo is more popular)
- Your pricing is above $9.99 where KU's per-page rate actually pays less than your royalty
The Verdict for Most First-Time Nonfiction Authors
Enroll for the first 90 days during your launch period to maximize discoverability and algorithmic support from Amazon. After the first 90 days, evaluate your sales data and decide whether to renew or go wide.
